Eight students from the University of Veracruz ended up in the ER of the Xalapa City hospital Centro de Especialidades Médicas today. Some of them are unconscious and with broken bones. They were attacked by armed civilians inside a student’s house. Wearing masks and police-style vests, the attackers broke in the house where these students were staying overnight. They beat them with bats and machetes, leaving them seriously injured. Some of them had their faces disfigured and lost their teeth. The attackers stole their cell phones and laptops specifically.
These college students victims of the brutal attack are dedicated civil rights and environmental activists. The attack takes place just a few days before the controversial midterm election in Mexico, in a state that is rated as one of the most dangerous places in the world for journalists to work.
The Human Rights Center Centro de Derechos Humanos Miguel Agustín Pro Juárez A.C. is denouncing the attack and lack of police protection for these activist students. More information at (In Spanish). http://ymlp.com/zMhqmU
