YOUR VACATION TO MEXICO IS MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE THAN THAT!

MEXICAN AIRPORTS ARE BUILT ON MURDERED MEN, RAPED WOMEN AND  SENTENCES UP TO 112 YEARS OF SERVICE, UNLESS PEOPLE PUT UP WITH AIRPORTS AND WALMART STORES BEING BUILT ON THEIR LANDS AND HOUSES.

“Cancun beckons with stunning aqua-blue waters and white-sand beaches. While Cancun’s reputation is for spring-break fun, wholesome activities for the family can be found: Ride horses on the coast, snorkel and canoe in a reserve, swim with the dolphins”, reads an advertisement. But the truth is quite different: the corporate-managed hotel and traveling industries across Mexico are imposing gentrification by force. When the media does not make its magic and people still resist to be taken out of their houses, like the Atenco people, then local and federal police get the order to set up, ambush people, beat them, rape them, shoot them and make prisoners. The media misrepresents these facts as “abuse” and “kidnapping” by the attacked people against the attackers and government officers, and Mexican intellectuals find all kinds of Indigenous-race and/or tradition based theories to blame the victims (like they did on the Acteal massacre in Chiapas). That is the real price you are paying every time you land on a modern Mexican airport, until a real democracy shows some respect to both the people and the environment while building resort areas and airports.

WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT IT?

BOICOT CANCUN AIRPORT UNTIL ATENCO POLITICAL PRISONERS ARE LIBERATED. Ditribute flyers at airports’ concessions. Leave flyers on waiting rooms. You can print and use the attached flyer or make some on Atenco victims.

TAKE AN INFORMED VACATION, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. The airplane ticket from the US to Cancun is cheap, but we cannot go there when our vacation time costs for Mexican members of communities in resistance to be raped, killed, or serving up to 112 years in prison so that there are modern resorts in Mexico and we can get some rest in the beach.  

EDUCATE OTHER TOURISTS. Refraining ourselves from going to Cancun is to no avail if we don’t explain why. We need to tell travel agents and Mexican Ministry of Tourism that we want amnesty to all the political prisoners of Atenco. We want amnesty because their punishment was a political decision and legal resources are not working.  

NOT ENOUGH TIME TO LEAFLET AT THE AIRPORT? There is always one travel agency offering cheap tickets to Cancun. Join the campaign AMNESTY FOR THE ATENCO POLITICAL PRISONERS by visiting all the travel agencies online (Expedia, CheapTickets and whatnot). Go to their “review” section on every Mexican city, where consumers compose their reviews. Explain the real price of these allegedly “cheap” tickets: people raped, killed, and condemned to perpetual imprisonment if they oppose to be evicted from their lands. 

Go to any travel agency office, ask for a vacation in Cancun, show your leaflets, and tell them you just wanted to let them know you  won’t go to Cancun until there is amnesty to all political prisoners resulting from the Atenco ambush.

HERE ARE SOME OF THE REAL PRICES OF  RESISTING NEW AIRPORTS AND WALMART STORES AROUND ATENCO:

Rape (vaginal and annal) by police officers to 26 women, for 6 hours, inside the truck heading to jail. 

One 60 year old women forced to oral sex to a Mexican policeman who got free on bail, as opposed to:

A sentence of up to 112 years of prison for the leader of the movement against gentrification, Ignacio del Valle. Sentence of 67 years to Héctor Galindo and Felipe Álvarez.

Two young men killed: Javier Cortés, 14 years old, was killed by a police gun, and  Alexis Benhumea, colleague student, died as a result of a tearing gas cartridge impact. 

None of the policemen who attacked are in jail. The victims are paying time in jail instead. 

WHAT ELSE CAN WE DO?

Make sure other 3 people you know send their protest online. 

Mail letters to travel agencies telling you don’t want to land on Mexican Resorts like Cancun until ALL political prisoners of Atenco are liberated and airports are built after real, truly democratic consensus with communities, and following real environmental standards. 

Send an email to the Mexican Tourism Ministry  ( HYPERLINK “mailto:quejasoic@sectur.gob.mx” quejasoic@sectur.gob.mx). Tell them that however cheap Cancun plane tickets are, you won’t go until there is amnesty to ALL the political prisoners of Atenco.

Hay un anuncio que dice que “Cancún tiene unas aguas de colores azules asombrosos y playas de blancas arenas… con muchas actividades para la familia: puede andar a caballo por la costa, bucear y remar en canoa en una reserva y nadar con los delfines”. Pero la verdad es muy diferente, las industrias de hotelería y viajes controladas por las grandes transnacionales por todas partes de la República Mexicana están imponiendo por la fuerza la rezonificación neoliberal. Cuando los medios de comunicación no logran sus efectos mágicos y la gente se sigue resistiendo a que le quiten su tierra pagando medio dólar por metro cuadrado, como se resistió el pueblo de Atenco, la policía federal y local recibe órdenes de concertar una provocación para golpear, violar, disparar y arrestar a la gente. La prensa presenta los hechos como “agresiones” y “secuestros” de la población contra las autoridades. Ése es el verdadero precio que usted paga cada vez que aterriza en un aeropuerto mexicano.

¿QUÉ PUEDE HACER?

SABOTEE LOS AEROPUERTOS DE CANCÚN HASTA QUE LIBEREN A TODAS LAS VÍCTIMAS DE ATENCO. Reparta volantes en los negocios de los aeropuertos. Déjelos en las salas de espera. Puede encontrar esos volantes adjuntos o elaborar los tuyos simplemente con la información  sobre las víctimas de Atenco. 

TOMAR VACACIONES INFORMADAS. El avión de Estados Unidos a Cancún es barato, pero no podemos ir ahí si nuestro descanso se va a pagar con violaciones a mujeres, hombres asesinados y luchadores sociales condenados hasta a 112 años en prisión para que en México existan instalaciones turísticas modernas y nosotros descansemos en la playa.  

INFORMAR A LOS DEMÁS. De nada sirve que nos abstengamos de ir a Cancún si no explicamos a los agentes de viaje y al Ministerio de Turismo de México que queremos la amnistía para los presos políticos de Atenco. Queremos amnistía porque su castigo fue una decisión política y por tanto los recursos legales no han funcionado; no se respetan ni se respetarán.

¿NO TIENE SUFICIENTE TIEMPO PARA IR A LOS AEROPUERTOS A DISTRIBUIR VOLANTES? Siempre hay una agencia de viajes en línea anunciando ofertas en Cancún. Únase a la campaña por AMNISTÍ

A PARA LOS PRESOS POLÍTICOS DE ATENCO visitando todas las agencias de viaje que hay en línea  (Expedia, Cheaptickets, etc.). Visite la sección de “comentarios” o “reseñas” de su viaje para cada ciudad mexicana, donde los viajeros comentan el servicio. Explique cuál es el verdadero precio de estos boletos supuestamente “baratos”: asesinatos, violaciones y cárcel de por vida a quien se oponga a la construcción. 

Visite una oficina de agencia de viajes, pregunte por los viajes a Cancún, entrégueles este folleto y diga que usted no está dispuesto a aterrizar en México hasta que no haya una amnistía para los presos políticos de Atenco.

ALGUNOS DE LOS PRECIOS DE LA RESISTENCIA A LA CONSTRUCCIÓN DE UN AEROPUERTO Y UN WAL-MART EN ATENCO:

Violaciones por vía vaginal y anal con dedos por parte de los agentes de la policía a 26 mujeres durante seis horas en el camino a prisión. 

Una mujer de 60 años obligada a dar sexo oral a un policía mexicano que quedó libre bajo fianza.

En cambio, sentencia de hasta 112 años de cárcel al líder del movimiento contra la rezonificación neoliberal, Ignacio del Valle, y de 67 años a Héctor Galindo y Felipe Álvarez.

Dos jóvenes muertos: Javier Cortés murió asesinado por un disparo policial y Alexis Benhumea, joven universitario, murió por el impacto de un cartucho de gas lacrimógeno.

Ninguno de los policías agresores está en la cárcel. Son las víctimas las que están cumpliendo condenas de cadena perpetua.

¿QUÉ MÁS PODEMOS HACER?

Asegúrese de que otras 3 personas a las que conoce manden su protesta a la agencia de viajes más cercana a su domicilio o en línea.

Mande cartas por correo a las agencias de viaje explicando que no quiere aterrizar en un centro turístico mexicano como Cancún hasta que los presos políticos de Atenco sean liberados y los aeropuertos se construyan donde los pobladores quieran y las normas de verdadera protección al medio ambiente lo permitan.

Mande un mensaje a la Secretaría de Turismo en México (quejasoic@sectur.gob.mx) y dígales que aunque esté muy barato el boleto de avión a Cancún tú no va a ir hasta que sean liberados TODOS los presos políticos de Atenco.
